Our Purpose

The purpose of having a governing body is to:

    • help the school to set high standards by planning for the school's future and setting targets for school improvement
    • keep the pressure up on school improvement
    • be a critical friend to the school, offering support and advice
    • help the school respond to the needs of parents and the community
    • work with the school on planning, developing policies and keeping the school under review
    • exercise its responsibilities and powers in partnership with the headteacher and staff not intervene in the day-to-day management of the school unless there are weaknesses in the school, when it then has a duty to take action.

Our Governing Body

All schools have a governing body which is generally composed of people from four different groups:

    1. The school staff
    2. The Local Authority
    3. Parents
    4. The Local Community

Each Governor is elected following procedures prescribed by the Local Authority.

At present, Arnold View Primary school has 10 governors drawn from these four groups. Working together, governors support the school, particularly in making key decisions about its overall vision for children’s education. As a group, we never lose sight of the school’s most important people: the children. We want the best for them trying always to keep what will improve their future life chances at the front of our thinking.

Our Chair of Governors is Mr Paul Key. He can be contacted through the school office.

No Governors have declared a financial or business interest that would conflict with their roles and responsibilities.  This is part of each committee meeting in order that Governors may state any conflict of interest in relation to the proposed agenda and withdraw if necessary.

How We Work With the School

Individual governors have specific links with areas of the school’s work and its priorities for improvement.

Governors also help to appoint the school’s staff. The work of the governing body is shaped by four committees:

Full governing body meeting, which is held each term, is the most formal of our meetings. The chair of governors, Paul Key manages these meetings.
Curriculum & Standards committee whose work focuses on the school’s pupils and helps to shape the school’s overall vision and its goals for improvement; it also supports all aspects of the curriculum, and includes matters of health, safety and welfare. The committee is chaired by Colin Shepherd.

Finance & Personnel Committee, as its name suggests, this committee oversees staffing and the school’s budget with a focus on getting value for money for the services provided for pupils. The committee is chaired by Robert Buckby.
